Employee Owners of Vermont LogoEvery October, PC celebrates Employee Ownership Month. It is a time to recognize each other and our achievements while giving back. Our Vermont team joined ten other Vermont employee-owned companies for the fifth year running to raise funds and food for the Vermont Foodbank. Together with Vermont Information Processing, VHV Company, Stone Environmental, Hallam-ICS, 89 North, Birdseye, Switchback Brewing Company, Phoenix Feeds, Alliance Group and PT360, we raised nearly $31,000 and collected 480 pounds of food. This effort will provide over 35,000 meals for Vermont residents in need.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success!

Next week the PC Construction team will wrap up the finishing touches on preservation work at Vermont’s historic Rokeby Museum. PC pledged to sponsor the project eight months ago and has since invested over $65,000 to complete high-priority projects to make the over 200-year-old structures safer and more accessible.

Rokeby Museum is among the best-documented Underground Railroad sites in the country and provides a glimpse at four generations of the Robinson family and their contributions to the Abolition movement. The completion of this preservation work ensures that future generations can continue to visit the Rokeby Museum to learn about racism, social justice issues and Vermont’s role in the Abolitionist movement.

Our partners, DuBois & King and Waterman Siteworks, also generously supported this project and contributed to the intricate work required on the historic site. Thank you to the Museum visitors and staff for your patience during construction. We are excited to see the Museum in full swing!

This week we celebrate the inaugural Construction Inclusion Week. We are proud of our colleagues at Clark Construction, DPR, Gilbane, Mortenson, McCarthy, and Turner Construction who came together in 2020 to create a Time for a Change movement in our industry. One result of their efforts is an entire week when contractors across the world come together to build upon our daily diversity, equity, and inclusion work and bring greater awareness to diversity in our industry.

At PC, we are about 18 months into our reinvigorated DEI mindset, and I have to say I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and the change we continue to make. We’ve asked a lot of hard questions and we’ve challenged practices, polices, and belief systems that have been in place even since our founding years. We have a long way to go – there’s no question about that – but we’ve made tremendous progress to date.

What I am most excited about are the doors this journey has opened. Just in the last month alone, we have made significant progress on two age-old scenarios.

First, we opened the channels of communication across the company, providing PC email and electronic devices to craft employees for the first time in the company’s history. This one action closes the communications gap and ensures all employees – regardless of position or location – have access to the same information at the same time.

We also brought to fruition an equitable benefits package for our craft employees that resulted in more paid time off, additional disability and life insurance benefits, and increased eligibility opportunities. Every person on our team plays a vital role in our success, and they have the right to be rewarded equitably for doing so.

So why did it take so long to make these changes, and so many others? Because that’s the way it always was. We simply didn’t pay attention and didn’t question where, why, and when those decisions originated. It took one person – George Floyd – to bring it all into perspective. And we aren’t turning back.

So, let’s take this week to celebrate how far we’ve come and to continue our efforts to do better and be better every single day.

In honor of Women Build 2021, I spent the day alongside some of the amazing women at PC Construction helping build a home for Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity. PC’s team of eight partnered with a group of regular volunteers who are all retired from the construction industry. We were quickly off and running, helping install blocking for cabinetry, decking the front porch, applying zip sheeting and building fly rafters. It was empowering to work alongside this seasoned crew and I am extremely proud of all we accomplished in one day. It is truly rewarding to know that we helped make a local family’s dreams come true.

South Burlington, VT – The employee-owners of PC Construction have once again prioritized hunger relief in their corporate giving, announcing today that the company will give a total of $60,000 to hunger-fighting organizations in 2021.

The company also gave substantially to hunger relief in 2020, as the number of Vermont families struggling with food insecurity increased from 10% to 25% in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. PC committed more than $90,000 to hunger-related causes last year.

For 2021, PC opted to move up its donations earlier in the year, so that the funding could be used to help support families with school-age children during the summer months, when free school lunch programs are either not available or are harder to access.

“The pandemic’s impact on American families is far from over, even as our economy starts to rebound and reopen,” said Jay Fayette, President & CEO of PC Construction. “COVID-related job and income losses are still taking a serious toll. Our team has always been committed to helping our neighbors, and we feel it’s especially important at this critical time, when so many families are having trouble putting food on the table.”

In Vermont, PC’s 2021 donations will benefit the Vermont Foodbank, the South Burlington Food Shelf, Feeding Chittenden, and Hunger Free Vermont. PC’s contributions are also directed to hunger relief organizations in Maine, New York, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, New Hampshire, and North Carolina.

South Burlington, VT – The employee-owners of PC Construction prioritized hunger-fighting organizations in their 2020 corporate giving to help combat food insecurity across Vermont, totaling well over $90,000 in donations since March. According to a recent news report, Before COVID-19 arrived, one of every 10 Vermonters struggled with food insecurity. Now one in every four residents in the state struggles to obtain adequate nutrition.

Over the course of the year, PC donated $10,000 each to the Vermont Foodbank, the South Burlington Food Shelf, and Feeding Chittenden, and the company was a sponsor of Spectrum Youth and Family Services’ annual Empty Bowl Dinner in October. The construction company also collected close to $25,000 from its employee-owners for its 55th annual United Way campaign this fall, and doubled that total with a 100% corporate match.

“We are very concerned about the impact the pandemic is having in our communities, especially related to food supply for our most vulnerable families around the state,” said Jay Fayette, President & CEO of PC Construction. “Supporting our neighbors and doing our part to make sure the basic necessities are met has always been a priority at PC. Food security is still a huge problem and with Thanksgiving quickly approaching, now is the time for Vermonters and local businesses to rally to make sure everyone has food on the table.”

Anyone interested in giving is encouraged to visit vtfoodbank.org to find a food shelf in your area.

In June, I made a commitment to spearhead change at PC. We continue to see tremendous unrest in our country with the tragic loss of lives, morality, and the basic commitment to treating everyone fairly and humanely. These issues run so deep. Take a look at some of the greatest motivators of human rights change in our history – Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks, Dalai Lama, Ghandi – and the great strides they made in our world, yet here we are struggling with the same challenges every single day.

While these challenges cannot be solved by one person or one company, PC is committed to leveraging our reach across the East Coast to improve our workplaces and the communities in which we work. I will rally our teams to take the steps necessary to ensure PC becomes a truly diverse and inclusive workplace. Together, we are researching, learning, and trying to comprehend where we are to shape our actions and our behaviors to do better and be better.

As an employee-owned company, we commit to:

  • A Diversity and Inclusion Board and six Action Teams dedicated to driving momentum on our efforts.
  • Engaging with minority candidates to add diversity to PC’s Board of Directors.
  • A corporate giving campaign that specifically recognizes diverse and underrepresented organizations and their accomplishments in our communities.
  • Educational opportunities for our employee-owners to create a culture of awareness and behavior around diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and in our lives.
  • A recruiting strategy that is deliberate and intentional to hire qualified and talented candidates from more diverse backgrounds.
  • Analyzing compensation across the company to ensure pay equity.
  • Reviewing our policies and procedures through an inclusionary lens and making deliberate changes that set the stage for a successful and diverse workplace.
  • Embracing and developing relationships with MBE (Minority Business Enterprise) and DBE (Disadvantaged Business Enterprise) firms to strengthen our project teams and bring perspective to our actions.
  • Reinforcing diversity and inclusion as a long-term company-wide commitment by incorporating actions directly into our strategic plan.

At PC, “Building Stronger, Together” is about culture. It is our commitment and it is our promise. We welcome, encourage and celebrate a diverse and inclusive workforce. It will make us a better company, help us make better decisions and lead our employee owners to bring their best selves every day.

This past weekend, PC traded in work boots for ski boots at the inaugural Founder’s Cup fundraiser for the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center. As an executive sponsor for the event, PC fielded a team of racers to compete in the dual Giant Slalom race down the slopes of Stowe Mountain Resort. For PC, it was a bit like coming home with so much of the resort’s landscape having been constructed by PC in previous years, including two venues for the event – the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center and the Spruce Peak Village Center.

PC’s race team, affectionately known as the “PC Hammers” were up against some stiff competition with teams including racers such as former Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street and current world cup racer Paula Moltzan, among many other notable racers. After a few training runs, the “The Hammers” took their first run and then stepped it up a notch for their second run. As we crossed the finish line for the final time, we were met with the sound of a ringing cow bell by PC President & CEO Jay Fayette.

The day’s festivities shifted to an Apres-ski event at The Club followed by a concert series at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center with music by various members of the Dave Matthews Band, O.A.R., Guster, and many others. After the opening set, Picabo Street came on stage and announced that the PC Hammers were the overall race champions, taking home commemorative Founder’s Cup trophy mugs!

A great day was had by all and we are proud to represent PC, both on and off the slopes.

This marks the fourth consecutive year PC has taken part in the event which raises much-needed funds to help underwrite research and education programs regarding heart health and stroke awareness.

Thanks to the generosity of family, friends and colleagues, we raised $5,535, ranking PC as the 11th highest fundraising team out of 62 participating companies. And as a bonus, the PC Construction Heart Walkers enjoyed some quality time together, strolling around Portland’s scenic Back Cove on a warm spring morning.

Heartfelt thanks to all who participated and the supporters who gave so generously!
